Frontosa Aquaculture at Aquatic Paradise
The Frontosa Cichlid, scientifically known as Cyphotilapia frontosa, is a striking and highly prized freshwater species native to the deep rocky waters of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Recognizable by its large, deep-bodied shape, pronounced nuchal hump on the forehead, and distinctive five to seven vertical black bars on a blue or white background, the Frontosa commands attention in any aquarium. This species can grow up to 33 cm (about 13 inches) in length and is known for its calm yet territorial behavior. Their natural habitat consists of deep waters ranging from 30 to 50 meters, where they form schools and feed primarily on smaller fish.
All About Frontosa

At Aquatic Paradise, we focus on replicating the Frontosa’s native conditions to promote healthy growth and natural behaviors in captivity. This involves maintaining hard, alkaline water with a pH between 8.0 and 9.0 and temperatures around 23-25°C. Providing rocky caves and ample space is critical, as Frontosas are territorial and appreciate dark hiding spots. Our aquaculture programs emphasize proper nutrition, including a diet enriched with protein sources like brine shrimp and larval insects, mimicking their carnivorous feeding habits. This careful attention to habitat and diet ensures robust health, longevity (up to 20 years in captivity), and successful breeding.
Moreover, Frontosa are known for their fascinating mouthbrooding reproductive behavior. Females incubate eggs and fry in their mouths, a process we closely support to maximize fry survival and development. Through in-depth research and hands-on aquaculture practice, Aquatic Paradise cultivates Frontosa cichlids with a focus on sustainability and well-being, contributing to the conservation of this iconic species and enriching the freshwater aquarium hobby community.
At Aquatic Paradise, every drop of care and expertise nurtures flourishing aquatic life—where dedication meets science to foster sustainable aquaculture and bring nature’s wonders into your world. ”
